The New School Lunch

The New School Lunch The New School Lunch

Did you know there are over 54 million children across the U.S that are out of school due to the Coronavirus outbreak?  Many of these children relied on their schools to provide a free, healthy meal, over 20 million to be exact. While the schools are doing what they can to continue to provide for their student with meals, some schools just don’t have the resources available to get them out to these children. As a restaurant owner, you may have the ability to help ensure the students in your community have a meal to eat every day. Here are some ways you can help.

Create a School Lunch Menu

Chances are, your restaurant already has a kid’s menu but if you don’t have one, now’s the time to create one. Simple meals like sandwiches, fresh fruit, and veggies are easy to create and the kids will get the nutrition they need. Remember, it doesn’t have to be fancy to please kids. Keeping things simple and providing meals that don’t need to be kept warm will also be in your favor if you are feeding a large crowd of kids every day.

Setup Around Town

Some students don’t have the means to travel to get their food. Setting up a lunch stand in local neighborhoods for the children to walk to will allow them to still have access to at least one meal a day. Of course, you need to ensure you are following your area’s regulations regarding social distancing and any other rules that may impact this.

Make it Fun

There’s no doubt about it, parents and kids are starting to get bored being at home every day. They have been cooped up together for weeks and the nostalgia of being able to eat out and not have to cook and clean for every single meal is setting in. So why not add some fun to their order? Kitchens come equipped with lots of ingredients for science projects. You could put together some science kits by gathering the ingredients for experiments to send home with them. Not only will they have a great meal to enjoy, but they will also get to have fun learning. It’s a win-win!

If there is one thing this pandemic has taught us, it’s that we are all in this together. And remember that even the smallest gesture can have a great impact on someone. So, whether you’re providing a free meal to a child or giving them a coloring sheet with their order, know that it is making their day just a little bit better.
