But it\u2019s disrupting the lives of thousands of Ukrainians and Russians, and Russia is taking some major heat across the entire globe. There have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/3\/10\/anti-war-protests-intensify-in-russia-along-with-police-crackdown\">protests<\/a> and boycotts against the war\u2014it\u2019s devastating, to be sure. And one of the major impacts we\u2019re seeing nationwide are rising prices at the gas pumps. With the <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">average price of gasoline<\/a> hitting $4.31\/gallon as of this writing, consumers are feeling the pinch. Prices haven\u2019t been this high in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/07\/gas-prices-are-heading-to-a-new-all-time-record.html\">nearly 15 years<\/a>. And why is that? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/03\/09\/gas-prices-going-up-russia-ukraine\/\">It\u2019s really complicated<\/a>, based on a host of factors all seeming to converge at once. The pandemic easing and vaccines becoming readily available meant demand for gas increased, which inevitably drove up prices. But the war in Ukraine is also playing a huge role. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/03\/09\/gas-prices-going-up-russia-ukraine\/\">Washington Post<\/a>, after Russia invaded Ukraine, the oil market started adding a \u201crisk assessment\u201d to oil prices. This \u201cwas compounded by sanctions banning U.S. banks from transacting with financial institutions in Russia,\u201d and the Biden administration is moving toward banning Russian oil imports. Lack of supply and high demand produce price spikes\u2014not just at the pump, but everywhere (including the grocery store).<\/p>\n<p>With rising fuel prices touching just about every part of our lives, we wanted to focus today on the impact this is having with delivery drivers. Folks who work for companies like DoorDash and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grubhub.com\/\">Grubhub<\/a>, or even delivery drivers at your local pizza place, and also places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org\/\">Meals on Wheels<\/a>, are generally using their own vehicles. With the rise in gas prices, their take-home pay goes down. It\u2019s an unexpected cost to have to absorb that fuel increase, so what does it all mean for drivers?<\/p>\n<p>One company doing right by their volunteers is <a href=\"https:\/\/wsbt.com\/news\/local\/with-increased-fuel-costs-food-delivery-services-are-feeling-the-pressure\">Meals on Wheels<\/a>, who has opted to increase the financial reimbursement to those helping out. But a lot of workers, like those employed by DoorDash and Grubhub, don\u2019t have that opportunity. With gas prices climbing higher and higher, it\u2019s making less and less sense for them to continue working. According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winknews.com\/2022\/03\/08\/delivery-drivers-hit-hard-by-rising-gas-prices\/\">Wink<\/a> article, DoorDash does say they help their employees find discounts on gas and car maintenance, but no word on an increase in salary.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers are likely feeling the pinch with restaurant deliveries, too &#8212; there are often delivery fees associated with getting food dropped off at your doorstep, so that\u2019s nothing earth shattering. However, some establishments are opting to raise that delivery fee. Perhaps this is to encourage folks to pick their food up themselves, or it\u2019s to mitigate the uptick in gas costs. We could also start to see price hikes on food at restaurants if we haven\u2019t already. No matter which way you slice it, the costs are getting transferred to the consumer.<\/p>\n<p>This all sounds grim, but it\u2019s likely temporary. <a href=\"https:\/\/graphics.reuters.com\/UKRAINE-CRISIS\/SANCTIONS\/byvrjenzmve\/\">Increased sanctions<\/a> against Russia are putting pressure on them to retreat, as their economy and global standing deteriorate.
