The week was long, the kids are hungry, and you don\u2019t feel like cooking. Where do you turn? Pizza, of course! Research reveals the staggering statistic that 3 billion pizzas are sold annually in the United States, and that we are each slated to devour 23 pounds of the pie each year. On any given day, <a href=\"https:\/\/brandongaille.com\/27-great-pizza-consumption-statistics\/\">roughly 13% of folks<\/a> aged two and over will eat pizza. Here, we\u2019ll talk through some of the most interesting facts about America\u2019s favorite pie.<\/p>\n<h2>The History of Pizza<\/h2>\n<p>Pizza, as you may have assumed, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pizza\">hails from Italy<\/a>. Naples, specifically. Italian immigrants first brought it to the United States toward the tail end of the nineteenth century. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lombardi%27s_Pizza\">Lombardi\u2019s,<\/a> located in Manhattan, was America\u2019s first pizzeria and opened its doors in 1905.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/times-insider\/2015\/04\/13\/1944-the-times-discovers-pizza\/\">New York Times<\/a> first brought \u201cpizza\u201d to its readers in 1944, noting three years later in 1947 that \u201cThe pizza could be as popular a snack as the hamburger if Americans only knew more about it.\u201d Pepperoni didn\u2019t become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/eat\/nation\/pepperoni-pizza-topping-history\">mainstay as a topping<\/a> until 1950.<\/p>\n<h2>The Topic of Toppings<\/h2>\n<p>Everyone\u2019s got their favorite pizza toppings, and sometimes we just can\u2019t come to an agreement when it\u2019s time to order. Some folks are very passionate about their best-loved adornments: Pineapple seems to be quite polarizing, while people tend to have a love-hate relationship with anchovies.
